LEGO sets by year, in numbers

Every year of LEGO sets in one table: how many sets were released, the average and median piece count, and the biggest set, computed from the catalog and refreshed daily.

This table is computed from the catalog every time the page is served, so it is as current as the database behind it (2026-09-01). It counts sets with a piece count and a theme; gear, books, part packs and bundles are left out. Both an average and a median are given, because a few very large sets pull the average up.

Read it with two things in mind. The current year is incomplete until December, and next year's announced sets appear early, so the top rows will grow. And records from the 1950s and 1960s are sparse, so those counts are floors.

The median moved less than the average: the typical set grew, but the growth in the average comes mostly from the top end, where sets of several thousand pieces did not exist before the 2000s.
