A LEGO theme is the line a set is sold under: City, Star Wars, Technic, Friends. It is printed on the box, it decides the style and the audience, and it is how most people think about the catalog. This site groups its 18,273 sets into 122 themes, each with a page listing every set and a page for every year the theme was active.

Themes and subthemes

LEGO's own naming is layered. Star Wars is a theme; within it, sets are grouped by film or series. Ninjago has seasons; City has Police, Fire, Space and more. The catalog keeps the top-level theme as the hub and shows the subtheme on each set page. Themes that were only ever a handful of sets are folded into the nearest parent so that every hub has enough to be worth a page.

Licensed themes and LEGO's own

2,495 of the 18,273 sets, 14%, belong to licensed themes: properties LEGO makes under agreement with another company, such as Star Wars, Super Heroes Marvel, Disney, Super Heroes DC, Harry Potter, Minecraft, Jurassic World, Indiana Jones. The rest are LEGO's own worlds. The distinction matters to collectors because a licence can end, which retires a whole theme at once, whereas LEGO's own themes retire set by set.
